Rest

 

It's not whether you get 6, 8 or 10 hours of sleep.  It's how much do you need.  The more engaged you are in your life and the less energy you waste on peripheral stuff, the less sleep you need.  It is truly amazing how much energy we waste stressing out about things we can't control or trying to be something we're not or avoiding doing things we perceive as unpleasant.

Quiet time is very important.  It's time when you're not chasing your thoughts or stressing about them.  Television doesn't count.  Your bodies don't know the difference between real fear based on immediate physical danger and perceived fear/stress from watching something stressful.

Sleep is not the only kind of rest.  Rest is stillness in body and mind.  Watching TV is not rest.  That’s not to say its bad (or good), it’s just not rest.  In this age of ever faster, more pressured life we have less rest time than ever in history.  This is not healthy.  There is no way to cultivate deeper connections without rest.  In rest, through meditation or prayer, lies the opportunity to connect with our big rocks, the feelings we most want to cultivate in life, our life purpose.  Never forget or omit the Foundation of Rest.
