Mental Attitude

Meditation or prayer 15 minutes upon waking and 15 minutes prior to sleep is a great place to start.  Find a comfortable  place to sit.  Focus on your breath coming in and going out.  Don't try to change the rhythm, just let it happen.  When your thoughts wander, don't run with them.  Always bring your attention back to your breath.  It's as simple as that.  With ongoing practice, wonderful things can take place in your life.  Be, don't do.  Life has a wonderful way of happening.

Borrowing a demonstration from First Things First by Stephen Covey:  If I fill up a bucket with pebbles, sand and water I have filled that bucket with many small pieces.  Doing this leaves no room for BIG ROCKS.  Our lives are the same.  If we spend our time filling up our lives with small stuff, there is no room for the BIG stuff.  I challenge you (as I do myself) to find out what your BIG ROCKS are and use your motivation to propel you through the little stuff, not letting it stop your life’s progress.  Wherever we are, whatever we’re doing, we have the grand opportunity of knowing our big rocks to help us move our lives in the direction of being more fulfilled and happier.

The Foundation of Mindfulness was alluded to in the opening to this article.  Mindfulness is concerned with knowing who we are in a context other than our surroundings and beneath the surface our predominant thought patterns.   Mindfulness invokes the non-judgmental silent watcher within each of us to participate more deeply in our consciousness and our daily lives.   It has to do with self-knowledge and understanding, compassion and nourishment of our selves as well as others.
